Case of Ceramic inserts processing - SKD11 material - Roll

Characteristics of SKD11 mold steel:

1. High hardness: The hardness of SKD11 mold steel can reach HRC58-60, with extremely high wear resistance, capable of withstanding high-intensity wear and friction.

2. High strength: SKD11 mold steel has high tensile strength and compressive strength, able to withstand large pressure and impact forces.

3. Good toughness: Although SKD11 mold steel has high hardness, it has good toughness and is not prone to cracking or breaking.

4. Good corrosion resistance: SKD11 mold steel has certain corrosion resistance and can resist the erosion of some chemical substances. 

Ceramic inserts turning mold steel:

1. High hardness and wear resistance

The hardness of ceramic inserts can reach 91-95 HRA, far exceeding that of carbide. The wear resistance is more than 5 times that of carbide. During the turning of mold steel, it can maintain sharpness for a long time, significantly extending the tool life. It is particularly suitable for processing mold steel with high hardness and wear resistance.

2. Excellent high-temperature performance

Ceramic inserts can maintain a high hardness (80 HRA) at temperatures above 1200℃. Their red hardness is 2-6 times higher than that of carbide. It can achieve high-speed cutting, with a cutting speed 2-5 times higher than that of carbide, effectively improving production efficiency and reducing processing time.

3. Good chemical stability

Ceramics have a low affinity with metals, strong anti-adhesion and anti-diffusion capabilities, and are less likely to undergo chemical reactions with mold steel, reducing the occurrence of chip lumps and sticking of the tool, ensuring the quality of the processed surface.

4. Low friction coefficient

The friction coefficient during cutting is low, and the chips are less likely to adhere to the inserts, reducing cutting force, reducing tool wear, and simultaneously improving the surface finish of the processed part. In some cases, it can achieve "replacing grinding with turning".

5. Wide application range

It is suitable for various mold steel materials, including cold working mold steel (such as Cr12MoV, D2), hot working mold steel (such as H13), etc. It is especially suitable for rough and fine processing of mold steel with high hardness and high toughness.
